This hybrid course introduce
What is B.A.A.R.C.™?
B.A.A.R.C.™ stand for “Behavior Analytic Approach to Relational Communication” and refers to a groundbreaking framework adapted from the knowledge base of human industries related to communication acquisition and development. Unlike conventional approaches to understanding animals that rely on interpreting body language alone, B.A.A.R.C.™ empowers animals to proactively express themselves easily and clearly through learned gestures that serve as systems of building block communications. Our animal learners are then able to arrange these building blocks in new and varied ways, generating exponentially more communication than ever before, and fostering a deeper level of interaction, clarity, and collaboration. This framework provides the prerequisite skills to obtain clear, relevant, and precise input from our animal learners, necessary for engaging in a learner-centered approach to teaching and training.
Most people are familiar with contrived communication aids like potty bells, or buttons, but B.A.A.R.C.™ takes it a step further, embracing gestures to ensure communication remains unrestricted throughout changing contexts. The goal of B.A.A.R.C.™ is to empower animals with strategies they can use to self-generate new ways of communicating with us. Through this framework, we can exponentially expand the communicative toolbox of animals. Imagine your pets or client animals actively shaping their experiences, offering creative suggestions that you may never have considered!

Concept & Skills Lessons
-
Part 1: Teaching Animals to Point (33 minutes)
In this lesson we will define communication in our animal interactions. Discover Joint Attention's role in effective communication. Introduce Generative Communication, enhancing animal skills. Explore pointing as a powerful tool for conveying intentions. Gain practical exercises with video demonstrations.
-
Part 2: Reverse Mimicry (51 minutes)
In this lesson, we delve into the fascinating world of motor imitation. introducing the concept of reverse mimicry, a paradigm shift where humans become mimics, copying the movements of their canine companions. Through reverse mimicry, humans empower dogs to control their behavior, fostering a deeper level of understanding and cooperation between species.
-
Part 3: Introducing Verbal Operants (20 minutes)
In this lesson, we will explore communicative behavior & verbal operants. Analyze human & animal examples. See how meaning is co-created. Understand how reinforcement shapes communication. Gain insight into successful exchanges. Learn to recognize verbal operants & appreciate diverse communication forms.
-
Part 4: Modeling & Multiple Exemplar Training (32 minutes)
In this lesson, we dive deep into the art of introducing gestural mands through observational and experiential modeling, We explore the power of modeling, both in theory and practice, highlighting a common example and addressing obstacles that may hinder learning. We delve into the concept of multiple exemplar training, demonstrating how it can be seamlessly integrated into modeling to facilitate faster generalization of skills.
-
Part 5: Constructing a System of Building Blocks (62 minutes)
In this lesson we introduce a system of building block communications, empowering learners to co-create experiences. Learn to construct communicative skills, enabling active participation. this system fosters safety, enriching interactions, and collaboration with animals. Take a deep dive through a sample system used on walks, and experience how B.A.A.R.C. can simplify learning for all.
-
Part 6: Insights into Motivation (27 minutes)
In this lesson, we highlight the role of B.A.A.R.C. in providing insight into the learner’s motivations. It’s not uncommon when first exploring a system to question whether or not your pet or animal learner truly understands it. Despite our best intentions, assumptions made on behalf of our animals can pose risks. We examine these risks in detail, discussing alternative explanations that may suggest a lack of understanding of the system by the animal learner.
-
Example A - Conflict Expressed as Pulling on Leash (4 minutes)
In this video we break down an example of a dog who uses this system to stop movement in a particular direction, and how automatically interpreting pulling as a desire to move in that direction can lead to increasing conflict and stress.
-
Example B - Stopping as a Desirable Outcome (7 minutes)
In this video, we break down an example of the benefits for the dog of stopping when the dog gets ahead of us. We examine whether or not our actions are perceived as punishing through a breakdown of body language in this particular example. Additionally, this is an excellent example of how it can be intentional communication to not choose a particular option, such as re-engaging movement.
-
Example C - Motivation Increases Behavior (2 minutes)
In this video, we break down an example of motivation increasing the rate of behavior associated with the desired outcome.
-
Example D - Comparative Body Language of Consistent Stopping (2 minutes)
In this video, we contrast the first session in which the handler felt that stopping was frustrating for the pup, they were more inclined to follow behind her without being told to move to the end of the session when human responses were more consistent.
-
Part 7: The Role of Response Effort in Enhancing Clarity (33 minutes)
In this lesson, we explore the concept of response effort and its impact on communicative behaviors in both animals and humans. By contrasting response effort, participants gain a deeper understanding of how it influences the clarity and interpretation of communicative behaviors exhibited by animals. We discuss how recognizing and interpreting differences in response effort can provide greater certainty in understanding our animals' intentions.
-
Example E - When Interpretation Doesn't Match Communication (21 minutes)
In this video we examine our interpretations and the benefits of enhancing clarity. In the first video, the handler believed that the dog was not using communication, and desired to get the human as they had in the past. In the breakdown, we note evidence of rule-governance, and the signs that the dog was using the system, but the communication used was unexpected and contradictory to existing beliefs.
-
Part 8: Reinforcement in Communication (37 minutes)
In this lesson, we'll delve into the concept of reinforcement and its crucial role in communicative learning. We'll define reinforcement and explore the different types, discussing how they can impact communication dynamics.

Sara Richter, CDBC
(She/Her)
Sara Richter began training professionally with horses over 15 years ago, with a lifelong passion for animals, her equestrian career spans 30 years. She is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant with the IAABC. and has also trained a variety of other species; including chickens, ducks, cows, pigs, sheep, rabbits, rats, parrots, cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, goldfish, and more! Sara’s approach to this work has been marked by several evolutions: She started out using compulsion-heavy techniques before she moved to more balanced methods, then committed to force-free methodology 13 years ago, and most recently has pioneered the adaptation of the learner-centered framework to animal training she uses and teaches today.
More than a decade ago, Sara stumbled upon the learner-centered principles set forth by the American Psychological Association. The discovery of that information, combined with her longstanding interest in the human industries of teaching, behavioral wellness, and mental health, set Sara on a journey that fundamentally altered her approach to working with animals. She describes the significance of her shift from traditional R+ methodologies to learner-centered strategies as equal to the shift she experienced moving from punitive to R+ methods. Learner-centered work similarly requires an entirely new foundational understanding, from which we develop new ways of looking at the puzzles before us and collaborate with our learners to put the pieces together. For the past 5+ years, Sara has applied this framework to a wide range of behavioral issues including human and dog-directed aggression, separation anxiety, reactivity, and more. Learner-centered training has inspired such joy, curiosity, and wonder for Sara, and she is eager to share it with others.
One of the learner-centered foundations Sara has developed is B.A.A.R.C.™. From Sara’s knowledge base in verbal operants, relational frame theory, and other adjacent concepts came a system of communication that empowers animals to talk to us, without us first having to ask. This system cultivates independently motivated and learner-generated communication, which unlocks new ways of understanding their needs, enabling unprecedented access to cross-species collaboration. In the 5+ years Sara has been teaching dog-human teams to use B.A.A.R.C.™, she has seen dogs problem-solve and develop resilience in endlessly surprising ways!
